달력에 다짐했다. 常壽 李鎬淵

달력을 쳐다보고 있는데 달력이 말을 걸어온다.

“나는 오늘이라는 천금보다도 더 귀한 선물을 너에게 주는데, 너는 나에게 무슨 선물을 준비했어?”

 

갑작스러운 질문에 당황하고 있는데 달력은 말을 이어갔다.

“오늘은 어제의 오늘이 아니고, 내일의 오늘이 아니야.

오늘을 맞이하기 위해서 그렇게도 간절히 염원했던 많은 사람이 오늘을 맞이하지 못한 사람이 얼마나 많은지 아느냐?“

 

이 말을 들으면서 정신이 번쩍 들었다.

고희를 지나 산수(傘壽)를 향해서 절반이나 지나왔건만, 달력에 선물을 준비해야 한다는 사실을 오늘에야 알았기 때문이다.

 

하루를 맞이할 때마다 오늘은 어제의 연속이고 내일로 이어지는 날 이외에는 특별한 것이 아니라고 안일하게 살아왔던 지난 날들에 미안한 생각이 들었다.

 

지금이 가장 빠른 시간이라고 했듯이, 지금부터라도 한순간도 그저 보내지 않도록 마음을 가다듬고 살겠다고 달력에 다짐했다.

My Covenant with the Calendar

As I was gazing at the calendar, it began to speak to me.“I am giving you a gift more precious than a thousand pieces of gold—this day called ‘Today.’ But tell me, what gift have you prepared for me in return?”

 

While I stood there bewildered by the sudden question, the calendar continued:“Today is not the ‘today’ of yesterday, nor is it the ‘today’ of tomorrow. Do you have any idea how many people desperately yearned to see this dawn,yet were never granted the chance to welcome this day?”

 

Hearing those words, I was jolted into sudden realization.Though I have passed my seventieth year and am already halfway toward my eightieth,it was only today that I realized I must prepare a gift for the calendar.

 

I felt a deep sense of regret for the days gone by—those days when I lived complacently, thinking that each new daywas nothing special, merely a continuation of yesterday and a bridge leading to tomorrow.

 

As the saying goes, “Now is the earliest time,”I made a solemn covenant with the calendar:From this moment forward, I will compose myself and liveso that not a single instant is ever spent in vain.
